2020 Skincare Trends You Definitely Need to Know About
1. Lip Care Treatment
2019 was all about scalp care, so now we’re moving on to another area that doesn’t get as much attention—your lips! Isn’t it about time we start taking extra care of our puckers?
Unlike your skin, your lips don’t have as many oil glands and they can get pretty beat up if you’re the kind of girl who loves lipstick. The good news is that 2020 is all about pampering your lips!
Japan’s been doing it for ages and we’re finally catching up! Just in time too because natural-looking lips make a comeback this year.
So keep an eye out for lip masks, sheets, and gels! Our favorites: UZ’s 38°C/99°F Lip Treatment and Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask.
2. Skin Toners
Toners have always been around, but they never really got the attention they deserve. Let’s be honest, they’re probably the most skipped step in your skincare routine.
In 2020, we’re going to see a renewed interest in toners. You’re supposed to use toners after you cleanse your face and before you moisturize it.
But why are toners magical? Here are a few things they do for your skin:
- Remove excess dirt
- Remove traces of makeup and oil
- Balance the pH of your skin
- Clean pores and help prevent acne
Toners are an extra step in your skincare routine to ensure that your face is a blank canvas that’s ready to take in all good stuff. If you don’t have a go-to toner, we love Thayer’s Witch Hazel Facial Toner with Aloe Vera.
3. Capsule Skincare
One of the latest trends is packaging skincare products in ampoules.
What are ampoules? These are single-dose skincare capsules. They’re more commonly used for serums.
This trend is already big in Europe and we’ll be seeing it over here soon. The skincare gods aren’t just going for a more interesting look, but encasing skincare products in capsules can actually help the ingredients retain more of its potency!
For example, active ingredients like vitamin C or retinol lose some of their power when they’re exposed to sunlight or air. On top of that, capsules can help minimize waste because they have the perfect amount of product!

4. Clean Beauty
The clean beauty trend gained some traction last year, but it looks like this trend is here to stay. This trend emerged as a response to harmful chemicals that companies have been using in their products for years.
These days, more consumers prefer products that are free from:
- Synthetic fragrances – Chemicals in synthetic fragrances may cause skin irritations, allergies, and dysregulate hormones.
- Parabens – Parabens are preservatives that can extend the shelf life of products. The use of parabens may increase the risk of breast cancer.
- Phthalates – Phthalates are skin conditioners and plasticizers. Already banned in the EU, phthalates are highly toxic and may lead to reproductive system damage.
- Cruelty – The beauty industry has a long history of testing products on animals. Cruelty-free simply means that the development of the products did not involve animal experimentation or testing of any kind.
Knowledge is power, even when it comes to beauty and skincare. Now, more than ever, consumers are mindful of what they put in and on their bodies.

5. Beauty Tech
If you’re a certified techie, you’re going to love this trend. More and more companies are using technology to help enhance your skincare routines.
This trend goes beyond the standard beauty or skincare app. Many companies are connecting their skincare devices and systems with smartphones to optimize and customize the user’s experience.
For example, Shiseido’s Optune is a beauty system that uses an app to analyze the user’s daily skin condition. The app sends the information to a machine which creates the skincare the user needs that day.
Foreo’s Luna fofo offers something similar except it links a silicone cleansing device with your smartphone. An app analyzes your skin and calculates the best way to use the device.
It customizes the intensity and duration of the vibrations. The app provides real-time instructions on where to move the device.
The developers of smart beauty products hope to drastically reduce your need for professional skincare advice. Skincare’s never been this easy!
6. Sustainable Skincare
Another trend that will be big in 2020 is eco-friendly skincare. With personalities like Greta Thunberg making headlines in 2019, more consumers are developing an environmental conscience.
They’re more mindful about how the products are made and what happens to them after they’re disposed of. Many companies have started re-thinking their approach to packaging.
We have large companies like Dove using 100% recycled plastic bottles for their products. Other companies, like Olay, are experimenting with refilling stations.
We’re also seeing numerous brands make a shift with their facial wipes. Facial wipes are notorious for taking up to 100 years to decompose in landfills.
Other companies are also providing packaging alternatives for products that are normally packaged as single-use (like sheet masks). Basically, recycling is so 2019—2020 is all about upcycling and zero waste processes.
7. Inclusive Beauty
Another exciting skincare and beauty trend is the expansion of product inclusivity. Fenty beauty first launched inclusive beauty in 2017, but the rest of the industry is still trying to catch up.
More companies are thinking about smaller demographic categories that are usually underrepresented. Isn’t that great?
Here are a few exciting inclusive beauty trends to watch out for:
- Male skincare, personal care, and makeup products
- Gender-neutral skincare and makeup products
- Makeup for people of color
- Makeup and skincare products for the aging population
- Skincare products for kids
No one should have a monopoly on skincare and beauty. These trends help redefine beauty and we’re all for it.
