Smashbox Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer
HOW IT LOOKS/FEELS/SMELLS:
Pressed on with a finger over a glossy or cream lipstick, the mattifying gel is transparent, feels light on lips, and dries down quickly and seamlessly. It has no discernible scent.
WHY WE LIKE IT:
Ever had a favorite lip color that was only available in a high-gloss finish when you really needed a matte? Now, instead of trying to DIY away the shine the old-fashioned way—applying lipstick, blotting color with a tissue, coating lips with translucent powder, feeling like you made out with a powdered donut—you can just apply this gel, which comes in a clever little tube, for shine-free color. It’s the easiest method we can think of to instantly double your lipstick options. It seems like magic, but really the clear gel creates a filter of silicone polymers that sit on top of your lipstick. Those polymers “reflect light and absorb oils from the lipstick underneath to take away its shine,” says cosmetic chemist Ni’Kita Wilson. “The silicones also bind to the lipstick and make it wear longer, without any feathering or cracking.” While that sounds like a recipe for a dry, tight, uncomfortable disaster on lips, if you can believe it (we didn’t at first), the gel actually makes them feel softer than they started out.
