The Glossier Rubik's Cube: We Solved the Mystery

From true-crime podcasts to conspiracy theories, I live for a good mystery. So when a Glossier Rubik’s Cube featuring different complexion shades in place of the classic white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow colors came across the brand’s Instagram, I went into supersleuth mode. The caption “Rg @michelgaubert” gave me nothing to work with, so I went to glossier.com to investigate the current Glossier lineup. Although most of Glossier’s of-the-moment products focus on skin care (including our new favorite serums and the crowd-sourced facial cleanser), they do have a handful of makeup options that could be related to the cryptic cube post.

The cool-girl brand currently offers five shades of the

and the Stretch Concealer. The shade selection ranges from Light, a beige color, to Rich, a dark chocolate. When the brand launched in 2014, they initially only had three shades of the Perfecting Skin Tint. A year later, they added two new darker shades. Could the brand be adding additional shades for the skin tint and concealer? With many brands like Urban Decay constantly updating their shade choices, Glossier can’t be too far behind with their products.

I enlisted my fellow Allure editors for further insight on the Glossier Rubik’s Cube case. All but one of my volunteer detectives echoed my theory. “Are they expanding their shade range?” each asked when I showed them the mysterious post. “Right now, there are only five shades,” said Ariba Alvi, our associate social media producer. “There are a lot more skin tones than that.” The lone wolf, Rachel Jacoby Zoldan, our deputy digital editor, speculated that they may be coming out with a contour palette. And then we heard back from Glossier for the real scoop: The image isn’t related to a new product. It’s in reference to their Perfecting Skin Tint and the shade range of the product, the brand told us. Mystery solved. Sarah Koenig, I’m coming for ya.
