This Designer Used Snapchat As Beauty Inspiration at NYFW
Art imitates life, and life imitates art, and this tends to be particularly true of designers tasked with producing season after season of fresh and innovative work. Nothing is off-limits when it comes to Fashion Week, and really, we’ve come to expect the unexpected. Case in point: This season, Desigual decided to re-create Snapchat filters as their makeup looks for their Spring/Summer 2017 runway show. The socially meta idea was executed to Instagrammable perfection—we can barely spot the differences between the makeup and the Snap filters, TBH.
Models donned golden butterflies, animal noses, doe eyes, shimmering highlights, and a slew of our other favorite Snap features. While it may be helping you get inspired for Halloween—imagine your group of friend all going as filters—there’s something even more significant at play here. We say inspiration can come from anywhere, but oftentimes we literally mean anywhere—as long as it’s a stunning exotic locale, a high-art museum, or a gritty subculture. To seek inspiration from the utilitarian device most of us carry in the palms of our hands? Now that feels fresh AF.
The looks were created by M.A.C. artists, and while it’d be easy to think that filter-makeup would look more comical than chic, there was some serious artistry involved (anyone not acquainted with Snapchat would likely appreciate the looks on their own merits). Not a single creation was anything short of jaw-dropping, and it just goes to show: beauty is, as always, in the eye of the beholder. And yes, Snapchat can be beauty inspiration.
