Watch: 100 Years of Blush in Under Three Minutes

Blush may seem like a sweet and simple beauty product, but in fact, it’s got quite a storied past. In the video above, we were able to pack 100 years of blush history in just under three minutes, taking you deep into the past of the glow-giving product. Yes, it’s the one product we can always count on to add a hint of color to our faces, and it’s a mainstay in some of the top makeup techniques gracing magazine pages and walking down runways, such as contouring and draping. But other genius uses abound: One of our editors even discovered it also works as a great hack to brighten your eyes, giving us a newfound appreciation for it. But this colorful substance wasn’t always used this way. This is why we decided to a step back into the beauty world and see just how much this makeup essential has changed.

As you’ll see in the video, it’s amazing how quickly blush techniques have transformed from decade to decade. We start in the 1920s, when red and pink rouge (commonly known as blush) was applied in large (sometimes pretty bold) circles to the apples of the cheeks. In the 1930s, women traded in the circular technique for a triangle-like application along the cheeks. However, the application methods weren’t the only things that changed. The growing popularity of makeup led to the creation of more eye-catching shades in the ’70s. You’ll also learn a few fun facts along the way. Did you know the cult-favorite

launched in 1999? That’s right, one of the most popular blushes on the market and the Best of Beauty Hall of Fame winner has been around for 17 years. Watch 100 Years of Blush above, to learn even more fascinating facts about this makeup essential.
