Watch How to Create a Glitter Mask for Halloween
If you’ve ever incorporated loose glitter particles into your beauty regimen, you know that although the outcome can be totally captivating, the application process sometimes cancels out all the fun. From unfortunate fallout, to product that just won’t seem to stick, and finding sparkles in every crevice weeks after — this type of pretty can be a pain. But, as documented in the recent viral video that shows exactly how to apply glitter nail polish the right way, it’s clear that once you find the perfect technique, you’re golden. So, we turned to makeup pro Violette to show us the ropes when it comes to bedazzling your face with sparkles (AKA the glitter mask), right in time for Halloween.
The trick? It’s all about the sponge-and-pat. Similar to the nail video seen around the world, Violette relies on dipping a sponge in a makeup-friendly glitter glue like Ben Nye’s, then taking the coated sponge and dunking it into cosmetic shimmer (she swears by MAC’s). Next, gently press the sponge against the skin in the areas you want to shine, paying close attention to being careful around the eyes. To add dimension, Violette chose two slightly different sparkle shades and used one on the bottom portion of Jasmine’s face, and the other on the upper half. “I used copper-y warm glitter options because Jasmine has yellow in her skin tone,” explains Violette. “You can play around with colors that coordinate with your skin tone, or change it up completely if you want to totally transform your face. The different colors will change the effect.”
But her biggest beauty note is that full-on glitter can tend to erase your born-with-it-features. Meaning, once you’re covered, you’re not fully done just yet. Violette went back in with mascara and a gel liner to create an exaggerated feline flick to bring out Jasmine’s eyes. Seal in the look with a setting spray and no one can stop your shine.
